Forever Young

Do you remember this song from the late eighties?

I can recall, clear as day, the first time I heard this song. I was in the fourth grade at my friend Erin's house. Erin was the youngest of three siblings, a brother and sister. Erin's sister was in high school and because we lacked common sense, we always spied on her and her boyfriend. The two were madly in love and had the most steamy make-out sessions! One particular day we were being overly obnoxious to her sister and her boyfriend, we wanted to hang out with them. Wanted so badly to be cool, just like them. We were intruding all over their privacy, as they lounged around her bedroom listening to a new tape. It was Alphaville and would you believe their favorite song was Forever Young.

I never in my life heard such a melody, it was good! Every word stinging my little conscience. Was I even old enough to make sense of the words?

Since then, whenever I cross paths with this song, I remember that day. Ack! The innocence of being in the fourth grade and forever young.

Alphaville - Forever Young

Let's dance in style, let's dance for awhile
Heaven can wait were only watching the skies
Hoping for the best but expecting the worst
Are you going to drop the bomb or not?

Let us die young or let us live forever
We don't have the power but we never say never
Sitting in a sandpit, life is a short trip
The musics for the sad men

Can you imagine when this race is won
Turn our golden faces into the sun
Praising our leaders were getting in tune
The musics played by the madmen

Forever young, I want to be forever young
Do you really want to live forever, forever and ever

Some are like water, some are like the heat
Some are a melody and some are the beat
Sooner or later they all will be gone
Why don't they stay young

It's so hard to get old without a cause
I don't want to perish like a fading horse
Youth is like in the sun
And diamonds are forever

So many adventures couldn't happen today
So many songs we forgot to play
So many dreams are swinging out of the blue
We let them come true.

Yep. I remember this. A friend had the tape and played it over and over during our 6th grade birthday parties. :)
